Rates
for Basic Services
- Proofreading/Light Copy Editing
Rate: $30.00 per hour
Guidelines:
Corrections for grammar, spelling,
punctuation, sentence structure, where necessary without major
rewriting or formatting.
(Note: we have discountinued our per-page rates for this service.)
- Heavy Copy Editing Rate:
$45.00
per hour
Guidelines: Corrections for
grammar, spelling, punctuation,
sentence structure, minor to moderate rewriting, no formatting.
(Note: we have discountinued our per-page
rates for this service.)
- Substantive
Editing Rate: $60.00 per hour
Guidelines: Corrections
for grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence
structure, major rewriting and formatting.
(Note:
we have discountinued our per-page rates for this service.)
- Manuscript Critiquing Rates:
$100.00 flat fee for documents under 50 pages or.
$3.00 per page for documents over 50 pages.
Guidelines: There
is a $50 minimum for manuscript critiquing services.)
Other
basic editing services combined with manuscript critiquing will be
discounted at 10% off the quoted rate for the added basic
service.
It is strongly encouraged that documents presented for
manuscript
critiquing are double-spaced, TNR, 12 point with one-inch margins all
around.
We
provide a FREE sample edit on portions of your text up to 500 words.

Rates
for Premium Services
- Developmental Editing Rates:
$75 per hour.
Guidelines:
Developmenatal
editing is a contractual service. Contact us to discuss your project. A
deposit of no less than 25% of the total fee is due at the time of
signing. A
deposit
of no less than 25% of the quoted price is due upon signing, payment is
to be made in intervals as determined in the contract. Final payment is
due prior to release of the final edited document.
- Consulting Rates: $110 per hour or fraction thereof.
Guidelines: Consulting
can be done on-site (local business clients only), by telephone or
electronically. Consulting is usually done by retainer, with
a
contract and billed monthly.
- Ghost Writing Rates: $90.00 per hour
Guidelines: Rate is contingent upon
anticipated final manuscript length, the
type
of project and such considerations as whether addtional research is
needed. Ghost Writing rates include proofreading by a separate Red
Pencil Editing Service wordsmith not involved in the project.
Ghost writing is not available to students at any level for any reason
at any time--ever. Ghost writing is by contract and only after
discussing your project with us to determine if we are a good fit for
you and your project. Confidentiality is insured unless
otherwise stipulated by the terms of the contract. A
deposit of no less than 25% of the quoted price is due upon signing,
payment is to be made in intervals as determined in the contract. Final
payment is due prior to release of the proofread, ghost-written
document.
- Express Editing Rates: Service price + 50% of the
service price.
Guidelines and Restrictions:
Express editing is only available for proofreading and copy editing
services. Express editing is defined as work with a 24- to 48-hour
turn-around-time. Work that comes in for express editing after 3 p.m.
on a Friday with a request for a Monday return will be treated as an
express job. Express editing is not available on major U.S. holidays
nor during the third and fourth full weeks of September. For express
editing 50% of the total fee is due up front, editing begins upon
reciept of funds. Paypal only for express editing. You will be notifed
when the document is ready. Final payment is due before the edited
document is released.
- Site Visit Rates: $75 per hour or
fraction thereof.
Guidelines
and Restrictions: For Detroit
Metro area business clients only and by appointment only. Site visits
are billed within 15 days of the site visit occuring, unless other
circumstances apply. We do not do site visits to the same location for
more than two consecutive business days.
The Fine Print
(Important Information)
- Rates
are charged hourly except where otherwise described.
- Rates
are based upon the average number of pages that can be read
and edited
in one hour for the service described. For these purposes, one page is
calculated as being 250 words long when formatted
in 12-point, Times New Roman (TNR), double spaced, with one-inch
margins all around without any page headers or page footers. This is
the benchmark for determining our rates regardless of whether documents
received for editing adhere to this format.
- For certain
editing services, adhering to the above format is strongly encourged,
for others, it is required.
- All rates are in
U.S. dollars and payment is to be remitted in U.S. dollars.
- Except where
otherwise indicated, a deposit of no less than one third of the quoted
price is expected prior to work beginning.
- Payment may be
made by EFT or credit card through Pay Pal or by check or money order.
Electronic payment is encouraged to cut down on wasted paper.
- Checks returned by
the bank for insufficient funds are subject to a $35.00 service charge.
- Payments
not made within 15 business days from invoicing may be charged an
additional late fee of net + 1.5% per month.
- Deposits are
non-refundable.
- All invoicing is
done electronically, either by an e-mailed PDF or through Pay Pal.
