Company History

Founded in Boston, Massachusetts in 2001, Red Pencil Editing Services started out as a hobby/secondary profession for Managing Editor, Erika-Marie S. Geiss, a Brandeis University and Tufts University alumna and now a work-at-home mom. In its early years, Red Pencil Editing Services concentrated on serving on the academic community on texts written by students and established scholars.

The joy of editing and simultaneously becoming increasingly frustrated with observing the decline of the English language while out and about had a snowball effect, and the projects that the company took on, grew in size and scope. In 2003, after moving to Michigan, Red Pencil Editing Services went high-tech and on-line, able to bring editing expertise to a wider range of  clients. We increased our client base to include business professionals, corporations and aspiring writers while still serving the academic community.

In late 2004, the company became an LLC and unveiled a new graphic identity.  By 2005 Red Pencil Editing Services had assembled a team of freelance editors and proofreaders (the Red Pencil Editing Services wordsmiths) to regularly work with the company's growing client base. In 2007 the company added express editing services on a limited basis and in January 2008 Red Pencil Editing Services added publshing to its projects, launching theWAHMmagazine as a subsidary. TheWAHMmagzine is the only content-driven digital magazine for work-at-home parents and is designed to provide parents who work at home with a resource that addresses all aspects of being a work-at-home parent. In April 2008 Red Pencil Editing Services lauched a new and improved Web site in order to provide its clients with more streamlined and efficient transactions.

  • Marna Poole
Marna has over 10 years' experience as an editor and writer. She knows that all too often, potentially great writing remains mediocre (or worse) because of problems with grammar or punctuation, factual or logical inconsistencies, or verbose or inelegant wording. A professional edit can fix these problems because a professional editor knows exactly what to change and what to leave alone.

In addition to her editing expertise, Marna's background includes nine years as a K-8 educator, five years as the content manager of an alternative medicine Web site, and a few relatively unproductive (but extremely fun!) years as a singer in local coffeehouses and clubs. She has written extensively for a variety of Web sites and has written articles for corporate and education newsletters. (And if you were to peek in the back of her closet, you probably would find her collection of children's stories.)

Marna is very pleased to be part of the Red Pencil Editing team and looks forward to helping writers polish their work until it shines.

  • Linda Schaefer
Linda has a passion for the written word, and has an undergraduate degree in English Literature. She has a desire to help others, and taught reading fluency and language arts instruction to culturally diverse, at risk students. Her exceptional knowledge of the English Language, and love for the written word, has always remained strong, and she has since left teaching to pursue editing as hermain career focus and objective. Linda has lived in London, England for two years, Sydney, Australia for one year, and most recently in New York City’s Upper West Side. Linda has always enjoyed a far off adventure, whether in a book, or experiencing it first hand.

  • Nina Welding
Nina has 20 years' experience in marketing communications as an editor, writer and advertising account executive. She is the author of several non-fiction articles and a children's play. If there is one thing that she has learned over the years it's that whatever stops your reader's eye--a typo, poor word choice, poor design choice or an awkward line break--stops your message. With the competition in today's markets, that is something that most businesses cannot afford.
